It's always Summer here in the "Aloha" State. Everyone lives within a few miles of the beach, and the mountains, all year round. There's no real sense of Summer here. Nobody likes ice cream. Everybody drinks lite beer. BBQ is Korean, and could be Fido. Most of the women are either swimsuit models, or they've given up on swimsuits altogether. Most of the men should, too. Nothing like a lite beer gut in a Speedo. But the little kids get a couple of weeks off from the endless grind of year-round school here, and you can see the joy in their teeny little faces as they bounce off the walls of the malls. So, somebody enjoys summer here, if only for a few brief years. And then it's off to work.

GET READY TO LOSE YOUR HEALTHCARE,
AMERICA: AND THAT'S A GOOD THING

Republicans Are Openly Against Us, Democrats Are Just Not For Us Quite Enough

The best thing that could happen in the current political set-up is for single-payer universal national healthcare to go down to a glorious defeat, spattering all the anti-progressive players with mud. Let the Blue Dog "moderates," aka Democrats In Name Only, and the suddenly "fiscally conservative" Republicans join together to kill our health care, and wallow in their last victory. Let that kill their extreme right-wing movement for a corporatist America, where we're all just cash cows and cannon fodder for them. It's over, once and for all.

Let the weak, wishy-washy "liberal" Democrats do what they have always done: Compromise, compromise, compromise until everything they promised to do fails miserably. And then let us progressives kick their non-fighting asses out of our Democratic Party and take it over once and for all, banning all corporate money and influence from the whole political process forever. That is the only solution to the healthcare problem, and all the other problems caused by corporate corruption of our government. Now is the time to clean our house.

It's crunch time, Demosaurs. You're either with us or against us; we, the progressive majority of the American people. If the money from a handful of multi-national healthco's means more to you than the well-being of 300,000,000 voting, taxpaying, long-suffering American citizens, then you are out on your fat asses in November 2010, 2012 and 2016. Maybe you didn't get the message we sent in November 2006 & 2008. Maybe you thought we really bought your line of bullsh*t. Maybe you thought that we were all just so much in love with you that you could sh*t all over us once we put you in office. F**k no. We're watching you just like we watched Gingrich and Cheney, and we'll sh*tcan you just like we did them. Fail us once, shame on you. Fail us twice, shame on us.

Anything less than full single-payer universal national healthcare will be a complete failure, and we will regard it as such. Just as your Wall Street bailout has all too obviously failed to help anyone on Main Street, your imminent failure on healthcare is plain to us all. Progressives are watching you every second of every minute of every hour of every day of every week of every month of every year. We see everything you do. We know who is doing what for whom and to whom and why. If you screw us, we will punish you at the ballot box. Count on it. Your gravy train stops here.

Marijuana Ingredient Blocks Opiate Dependence, Study Says

Paris, France: The administration of oral THC in rats suppresses sensitivity to opiate dependence, according to preclinical findings published in the June 24 issue of the journal Neuropsychopharmacology.

An international team of researchers from France and Canada assessed the impact oral THC (dronabinol) exposure in maternally deprived rats. (Rats that are deprived of their mothers immediately after birth are far more vulnerable to opiate dependence than non-deprived subjects.)

"[D]ronabinol treatment on maternally deprived rats normalized ... morphine consumption and suppressed sensitivity to morphine conditioning," researchers reported. "These findings point to the self-medication use of cannabis in subgroups of individuals subjected to adverse postnatal environment(s)."

Clinical data published this month in the July/August issue of the American Journal on Addictions reported that drug treatment subjects who used cannabis intermittently were more likely to adhere to treatment for opioid dependence.

Commenting on the studies, NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano said, "These findings undermine the notion that cannabis is a so-called 'gateway' to hard drug use. Rather, these results indicate that in certain populations marijuana may be a useful tool for deterring the initiation or continuation of hard drug abuse."

Hawaii: Governor Vetoes Medicinal Marijuana Task Force Measure, Again

Honolulu, HI: For the second year in a row, Republican Gov. Linda Lingle has vetoed legislation that sought to establish a study committee to examine options for providing patients with access to medical cannabis.

As approved by the legislature, Senate Bill 1058 called on a special legislative task force to "report on the policies and procedures for access, distribution, security, and other relevant issues related to the medical use of cannabis for all the states that currently have a medical cannabis program."

In her veto message, the Governor alleged, "The medical task force is unnecessary because it would attempt to deal with issues ... that can only be addressed by circumventing federal law."

Under the state's medical marijuana law, which was enacted by the legislature in 2000, over 3,000 Hawaiians are registered with the state to possess and or cultivate cannabis.

A majority of those in prison in America today are there for drug "offenses" that are part of everyday life for most Americans at one point or another in their lives. Those who end up in jail are disproportionately young, poor, male, minorities and "troubled." That is, they are people whom society itself has not only failed, but who are themselves the victims of society's worst prejudices. Today, we place a musical key in the social locks on their immortal cells, and set them free. May it come to pass in the real world, some day.

"And that is that they went about systematically understanding how to disrupt and change a person's entire processes. And these Taliban -- I'm not trying to say the Republican Party is the Taliban. No, that's not what we're saying. I'm saying an example of how you go about [sic] is to change a person from their messaging to their operations to their frontline message. And we need to understand that insurgency may be required when the other side, the House leadership, does not follow the same commands, which we entered the game with." When pressed to clarify, Sessions said he was not comparing the House Republican caucus to the Taliban, the Muslim fundamentalist group. The group followed through Wednesday on an earlier announcement that it would be filing a complaint with the Senate Ethics Committee. While Ensign stressed the word consensual in his disclosure, Melanie Sloan, executive director of the watchdog group, said the ethics committee needs to investigate whether sexual harassment had occurred. She said it's well established that sexual harassment is a form of discrimination that Senate rules don't allow. Sloan also said that payments to the couple involved, Doug and Cynthia Hampton, merited investigation. '

"A number of the participants from the Brazil trade and investment mission, at the invitation and suggestion of Secretary Taylor and at their own personal expense, went to Cordoba, Argentina, following the Brazil mission to go bird hunting," Borie added. '

Food Inc: Michael Pollan and Friends Reveal the Food Industry's Darkest Secrets

The new film Food Inc. is a shocking look at the health, human rights and the environmental nightmare that lands on our plate each meal.

It turns out that figuring out the most simple thing -- like what's on your dinner plate, and where it came from -- is actually a pretty subversive act.

That's what director Robert Kenner found out while spending six years putting together the amazing new documentary, Food Inc., which features prominent food writers Michael Pollan (The Omnivore’s Dilemma) and Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation).

Warning: Food Inc. is not for the faint of heart. While its focus is not on the gory images of slaughterhouse floors and filthy feedlots, what it does show about the journey of our food from "farm" to plate is not pretty.

The story's main narrative chronicles the consolidation of our vast food industry into the hands of a few powerful corporations that have worked to limit the public's understanding of where its food comes from, what's in it and how safe it may be.

But it's also a larger story about the people that have gotten in the way of the stampeding corporate herd -- like farmer Joel Salatin (also profiled in Pollan's Omnivore’s Dilemma), who has bravely bucked the trend to go corporate.

There's also Barbara Kowalcyk, who becomes a tireless food-safety advocate after her 2 1/2-year-old son Kevin died from eating an E. coli-tainted hamburger. And there is the economically strapped Orozco family, which is faced with the difficult decision of whether to save money by buying cheap processed food and spend more later on medical bills, or spring for the more expensive, but healthier food options that stretch its immediate income.

There are also the farmers who appear with their faces blacked out on screen for fear of Monsanto, or the communities ravaged by Type 2 diabetes, or the undocumented workers at processing plants who are recruited from their NAFTA-screwed homelands, illegally brought over the border to work dangerous jobs for peanuts, only to be humiliatingly sacrificed in immigration raids that only criminalize workers and never the employers.

It's really the people that make this film so riveting. If you've read Pollan's or Schlosser's important works, then you already know a lot -- but the film is still eye-opening on so many levels. And sometimes, you really just have to see it to believe it.

Both Pollan and Schlosser narrate the film, but it is the ordinary folks in the film that make you realize how critical these issues are to the future of food, health care, the environment and human rights in this country.

If you care about what you eat, then you should see this film -- and if you do, you'll likely never walk through the supermarket in the same way again. And that's a damn good thing.
